But that is not to be. We went to the airport, checked our bag and went through security, and settled in to wait to board our plane, when I had sudden and severe pain in my chest, and down my left arm into my hand. We waited awhile, took something for heartburn, then an Excedrin (the only thing we had with aspirin in it) but nothing helped. I finally told my husband I could not get on an airplane, and we called 911. I had indeed, and surprisingly, had a heart attack, so ended up in the hospital, instead of in New England.</div><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiff5BQm71YQWWkjuc-bK11pYUL3n2Ub1wnVG8yPTO_gGzunEzlkFSSvHhgdSr5hreKAnzanXmcRvSBVUPQGbPKyE5uUlHFgDhdS093xm3pceXPoZfTEvWRaDNS8K0noS9DEB7LhM3aTEbRvupdZuFh_3IsLL4hfI5wC5Xw8ECIqy3hKGZnl8L9K7Zb43Q/s3230/AB28563E-451C-4634-B659-C2122C8335BD.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2827" data-original-width="3230" height="350" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiff5BQm71YQWWkjuc-bK11pYUL3n2Ub1wnVG8yPTO_gGzunEzlkFSSvHhgdSr5hreKAnzanXmcRvSBVUPQGbPKyE5uUlHFgDhdS093xm3pceXPoZfTEvWRaDNS8K0noS9DEB7LhM3aTEbRvupdZuFh_3IsLL4hfI5wC5Xw8ECIqy3hKGZnl8L9K7Zb43Q/w400-h350/AB28563E-451C-4634-B659-C2122C8335BD.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I had a couple of stents put in blocked arteries, was given a bucket load of medicines, and was sent home.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg65VkskvknVdnmTJLJXxYMhxkCRJaXErAOPy35alsZYAyj-0SVEZJsw28zNyxU71klKFhAQ9iD-wy77sbyY8h6oBjS51HZMHpan0I338ywLDx3pgd4dICA1de9L5a5qK7jqEcweRq6ODJNU69xjd7gHIv9oDC-W3eVir7X4_BYKdMQP8tAzMasnC64oXE/s1491/B3A3A52F-734B-4D4D-8CA5-2A161D08B248.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1491" data-original-width="1440" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg65VkskvknVdnmTJLJXxYMhxkCRJaXErAOPy35alsZYAyj-0SVEZJsw28zNyxU71klKFhAQ9iD-wy77sbyY8h6oBjS51HZMHpan0I338ywLDx3pgd4dICA1de9L5a5qK7jqEcweRq6ODJNU69xjd7gHIv9oDC-W3eVir7X4_BYKdMQP8tAzMasnC64oXE/w386-h400/B3A3A52F-734B-4D4D-8CA5-2A161D08B248.jpeg" width="386" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I was pretty discouraged, but a friend brought me a decaf americano and a flamingo bubble machine, and we sat on my porch, enjoying ourselves ‘anyway.’</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLZJM0F0O5rJeDe-6RmIRJzwLM7CpL1n0WEsAGdRR8eDYV_HtUptDsTE_oA06io-gLU6y1x_cGF73Gj_RYtmm0UFyg0qLgsbMwzr47KDw3prO1cU5JTbw7hhK4MMTXwHaiSEH67JvYWDdTnmoriDIRrVj78TmBEK1FeLFn9ki0S_vCxX-x3gaqWbcbTuY/s2511/PastedGraphic-2.tiff" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1652" data-original-width="2511" height="264" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLZJM0F0O5rJeDe-6RmIRJzwLM7CpL1n0WEsAGdRR8eDYV_HtUptDsTE_oA06io-gLU6y1x_cGF73Gj_RYtmm0UFyg0qLgsbMwzr47KDw3prO1cU5JTbw7hhK4MMTXwHaiSEH67JvYWDdTnmoriDIRrVj78TmBEK1FeLFn9ki0S_vCxX-x3gaqWbcbTuY/w400-h264/PastedGraphic-2.tiff" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I happened to hear Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’ and decided it is my new ‘theme song.’ I am playing and singing it every time I reach for my guitar.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcHm1kX8BDYejrMftcMOhIqeQRtbNRTu0RMjR3mO08gw-3Ren9e-RrjCP34Ag8X2BilyCtDluej3jkYYbq9fuhMZ0uRbYTzKQac01HGmTWVcqiuCXYCkdVYpYCxn-cDPnEDCfPdzRGdfAXFkkTsw8EncaV_ZkVdqZci-1VxlI1TGaJo5qzK7gJFiSt8fI/s2487/CB166DEA-EF26-48A9-819B-E3ACA41776A2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1617" data-original-width="2487" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcHm1kX8BDYejrMftcMOhIqeQRtbNRTu0RMjR3mO08gw-3Ren9e-RrjCP34Ag8X2BilyCtDluej3jkYYbq9fuhMZ0uRbYTzKQac01HGmTWVcqiuCXYCkdVYpYCxn-cDPnEDCfPdzRGdfAXFkkTsw8EncaV_ZkVdqZci-1VxlI1TGaJo5qzK7gJFiSt8fI/w400-h260/CB166DEA-EF26-48A9-819B-E3ACA41776A2.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /></div>And I am trying to let myself notice things that give me Joy, like noticing the view from my doctor’s office waiting room window.<p></p><p>I have good days and not-so-good days. I only took a small sketchbook, a black pen, and 2 charcoal pencils; a black and a terracotta one. I sketched the 3 goats and the pig onsite, but added the girls with their animals when I got back home, with colored pencils. I sold fairly well, which was also motivating. After leaving the gallery (which was intended to be a short leave) I quit painting. Recently I decided to re-educate myself a bit, by going through my large library of art books, and gleaning what I can from them, and then I will donate the books to the local Art Center.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I began with a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Paint-Impressionists-Jonathan-Stephenson/dp/050028878X/ref=sr_1_6?crid=OBGLV986P7HP&keywords=painting+like+the+impressionist&qid=1648055377&s=books&sprefix=painting+like+the+%2Cstripbooks%2C357&sr=1-6">book</a> about painting like the Impressionists (I have an early version of this book.) The first example/challenge was to paint a landscape like Monet. I chose to paint from a photo I had taken of one of my 'grand dogs' on a walk in New England. I know painting from a photo is NOT like Monet would have done, but I decided to adapt to my own circumstances. This is oil on canvas, and it was a challenge! I don't know that it is Monet-like, but I did use his palette and attempted to use brushstrokes as he did in his landscapes .<br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN0Abb16We1MdTvpTTGBRD03ypl8jKwcpVOJLM105D09rSRhM47rkIG7fHg9kEeJ7ns5PWwG3TTp3vVgnZ5Ih82DEm4UMSigegBdM1LhalTe9XhjLWAipBb4wpkSGsDhGXfWQC61BLCrdxVCDKfKUBzr79bRs1WkNitW8CkObUqBU1epdi4hQe-kka/s1400/3.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1062" data-original-width="1400" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN0Abb16We1MdTvpTTGBRD03ypl8jKwcpVOJLM105D09rSRhM47rkIG7fHg9kEeJ7ns5PWwG3TTp3vVgnZ5Ih82DEm4UMSigegBdM1LhalTe9XhjLWAipBb4wpkSGsDhGXfWQC61BLCrdxVCDKfKUBzr79bRs1WkNitW8CkObUqBU1epdi4hQe-kka/w400-h304/3.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Cabin in Winter</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">The second challenge was to paint a snow scene in the style of one of the lesser known Impressionists, but one I have always liked very much, Sisley. This was painted (again from one of my photos) of our cabin in the winter. It was in my landscape sketchbook, which has heavy watercolor paper. I painted it in gouache, painted as if with oils. Again, I replicated Sisley's palette as closely as I could.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8boTAMlGinGYvcSiHy9w06wJVtt5y2awW3HL8KUJgAQnIAaEBzxAwKdS7Oj4PY76gBigAbFe9-rGY9IWr-HTgLFEEhXcf_9myicnBeRmuH__1yZAAj6S9ZzSZfnNcwIcM4zDgA4RlCAKkaN3EYQmkNgUCtyaNnmlzOP1s0QLcC6BuDd1LUSGvJKxM/s1400/2.jpg" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1013" data-original-width="1400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8boTAMlGinGYvcSiHy9w06wJVtt5y2awW3HL8KUJgAQnIAaEBzxAwKdS7Oj4PY76gBigAbFe9-rGY9IWr-HTgLFEEhXcf_9myicnBeRmuH__1yZAAj6S9ZzSZfnNcwIcM4zDgA4RlCAKkaN3EYQmkNgUCtyaNnmlzOP1s0QLcC6BuDd1LUSGvJKxM/s400/2.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">New England Boats</td></tr></tbody></table><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The third challenge was to paint a boat scene in the style of Renoir, who didn't consider himself an Impressionist, but who occasionally painted in an impressionistic style. I again did this in my sketchbook with acrylics, using Renoir's palette, and doing it in several sessions, as he would have done. I used the palette Renoir used in a similar scene and used a photo I had taken in New England for my source. The photo had very different colors, but I decided to just go with Renoir.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPktNfA8riqvhzsq1Vzc84S67JxAfBCguKL2Yb7lvLTn2642pNtceKB41SEPUi4puDn2FqW1FPK6vsARdotyWBT0omkcMo3rnY2G4GqSscWhg2y2aL3n3a4n6XeobVOV6AF_PNrJqoxgfnA4woB1Uh9kkkPVPwSm3h8pG2XDvUlGyqq6maDNjXbwzl/s1400/4.jpg" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1400" data-original-width="1060" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPktNfA8riqvhzsq1Vzc84S67JxAfBCguKL2Yb7lvLTn2642pNtceKB41SEPUi4puDn2FqW1FPK6vsARdotyWBT0omkcMo3rnY2G4GqSscWhg2y2aL3n3a4n6XeobVOV6AF_PNrJqoxgfnA4woB1Uh9kkkPVPwSm3h8pG2XDvUlGyqq6maDNjXbwzl/s400/4.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Apple Still Life</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The most recent experiment/challenge was to paint a still life in the style of Cezanne. This is acrylic on canvas, again using Cezanne's palette as closely as I could, and painting it in one session.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Doing these paintings/sketches in different styles, with different painting 'attitudes' has been challenging, rewarding, and flat out fun! I have loved having a loaded paint brush in my hand again. I don't necessarily view any of these as 'successful,' either as style-copies of these masters, or as paintings in and of themselves. But what I have learned from doing them is invaluable: it is that I love learning and trying new challenging things, and that I love painting, especially with oils. So I intend to continue this study, and perhaps find that I will discover my own way of making brush strokes, and that some of what I create may even find it's way into the medium I love most, handwoven tapestry. After all, that is why I began painting in the first place, to design for my tapestries.</div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript">

The later prompts do not inspire me, and I am wanting to use my limited creative time weaving or sketching and painting with other media. Several of these sketches I believe would have been better if done with something other than ink. The prompts for the sketches above are Compass, Moon, Loop, Helmet, and Open. It was a somewhat familiar scene, looking much like sites I've camped in.</p><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_iD8mgntImv-ajP0ORRwga0eZDzTnnOuhL6TcN-vYFyArYtCa3iWBT4FShBKznGSjyxM0ahQsVYV-HLttTMWrKTkCRPAfCqdqKXrENaxoAySMyHPiELDvDV91tySbF3gjIpsFDNTDSDA/s1400/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="732" data-original-width="1400" height="209" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_iD8mgntImv-ajP0ORRwga0eZDzTnnOuhL6TcN-vYFyArYtCa3iWBT4FShBKznGSjyxM0ahQsVYV-HLttTMWrKTkCRPAfCqdqKXrENaxoAySMyHPiELDvDV91tySbF3gjIpsFDNTDSDA/w400-h209/2.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Colonia Güell, Barcelona, Spain w/David Morales</td></tr></tbody></table><p style="text-align: justify;">The second day was all fine point ink, and hatching, which I normally avoid. However, I really enjoyed this sketch as well, quiting before the hatching bored me too much. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">The next day was also ink, but with a fountain pen. I am more comfortable with fountain pens, as I write with one daily. So I enjoyed the pen, but I was a bit frustrated because the artist was sketching on site, but we were using a photo and I could not always see what he was seeing. My sketch (below) shows my frustration. However, having never been bold enough to just jump in and sketch a scene like this with a fountain pen, I am now looking forward to trying it on my own scenes.</p><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwBBvUCR8h_kCICSSUFxDpdsRS1f8i45-L8EgoPFuK_kQLeb6gphnM7mBrmdxC6pwG7Yaht_NUS3mEt8CJdxtvBNA1yrbixZQLlMkyXk2SBJ30-nLKmJ-VvKg5PscgefZAOZVdo3cQpk/s1593/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1593" data-original-width="1097" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwBBvUCR8h_kCICSSUFxDpdsRS1f8i45-L8EgoPFuK_kQLeb6gphnM7mBrmdxC6pwG7Yaht_NUS3mEt8CJdxtvBNA1yrbixZQLlMkyXk2SBJ30-nLKmJ-VvKg5PscgefZAOZVdo3cQpk/w275-h400/3.jpg" width="275" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tehran, Iraq city scene w/Hesam Hasanipour</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj89yi7n_vgL5tYNiA4BXIDqKmy-du_NPZ5fHpl6t1_ZEPHR9W4be5BbHv6h-onMkR4YjoC6hEQCeka9u3k4lL7-uwuP6e-cMjXUASdtKcpbj0z6VcuDIJveoAdrQ0XKWwrM4Hcg4b065g/s1400/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="964" data-original-width="1400" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj89yi7n_vgL5tYNiA4BXIDqKmy-du_NPZ5fHpl6t1_ZEPHR9W4be5BbHv6h-onMkR4YjoC6hEQCeka9u3k4lL7-uwuP6e-cMjXUASdtKcpbj0z6VcuDIJveoAdrQ0XKWwrM4Hcg4b065g/w400-h275/4.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">WA State Vineyard w/Amy Stewart<br /><br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><div style="text-align: justify;">These last two sketches used mixed media. I truly have felt isolated and 'stuck' in one place for the last year and a half, so sketching other scenes is very refreshing. It is also refreshing for me - at this time - to sketch in new styles, and with materials I may not be as comfortable or familiar with. When this sketchbook is filled, at the end of these 30 days, it will contain many options for me to choose from as I continue sketch and creating my own sketching 'style.'</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript">

We have never had multiple days over 100* in June, but a week ago, we had a full week of days, plus a few more, above 100! It was record breaking heat. I do not like heat like that. To top it off, tourist season has begun here, in spite of the fact that COVID is winning the war here, due to stubborn, misinformed, and selfish people who will not be vaccinated. Yes, I did say that out loud! I am having to be tested twice a week now to continue to be my Dad's caregiver, because the Delta variant has been spreading rampantly through our valley. Our county is one on that 'worst in the country' list. But if you go out in public, almost all people are mask-less (though most people in our area are not vaccinated) and it looks like there never was a pandemic, let alone that it is spreading here. In fact, I assume that if I do see someone with a mask on, they are one of the vaccinated and cautious few, as I am. We have even had a good number of vaccinated people test positive with the Delta variant, and also a few COVID deaths of vaccinated, but high risk, people. So this is all stealing some MoJo from me.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3z0K3zbDjF5DTSyTnkIq5bnrakkX0uR495Qwj2U03lrfLLhIiB6V0s1WXBcU-ycX0P1kT1u8gUDsAIX0Ey1d5RY5QaQGD9o2fSq-lq0rmJuvtxLALVoihhUFprOP9LbTmLQluYDLjOqU/s1600/5.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="861" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3z0K3zbDjF5DTSyTnkIq5bnrakkX0uR495Qwj2U03lrfLLhIiB6V0s1WXBcU-ycX0P1kT1u8gUDsAIX0Ey1d5RY5QaQGD9o2fSq-lq0rmJuvtxLALVoihhUFprOP9LbTmLQluYDLjOqU/w215-h400/5.jpg" width="215" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: justify;">Last week was my Father-in-Law's 100th birthday! We had a small party of vaccinated people here to celebrate: my son, and one of my grandsons, my husband's niece and her husband, and a good family friend. This is a man who wears 100 well! </p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsSRXaM78CaAdaaMHhfORx2hsTGU90H8xyMNVVu6QTvHRhmwf2B2p-bfALEhUmq0nj5ELkVqgaoGZUK9ZHEGVfajxlwpqoXSau7n6YOQTQn3jor0G1_X7OmmyHG6ReAS15wcZrA_lCBdU/s1400/2.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1400" data-original-width="1050" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsSRXaM78CaAdaaMHhfORx2hsTGU90H8xyMNVVu6QTvHRhmwf2B2p-bfALEhUmq0nj5ELkVqgaoGZUK9ZHEGVfajxlwpqoXSau7n6YOQTQn3jor0G1_X7OmmyHG6ReAS15wcZrA_lCBdU/w300-h400/2.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: justify;">After the birthday folks left, my brother and his wife and their Golden Retriever, Cooper, came to see my Dad for Father's Day. Booker and Cooper get along very well, but the cats were not sure about another big dog that wasn't their brother, Booker. Ringo finally decided to check him out. Of the two cats, he is the smallest but the bravest.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVdHKyWqqV5h8PItLYNeQlXkbOJh9oUFfCCQWoBqIqbhWqRC5bf4w_wN8ykkw1HVTEGNDtN29_4U_j9zhWEcnu1OFojqCNHWCkI0VtB3ATztt6L6Asc7-RIztNI9PCyz0CW26i8X3HrwE/s1400/4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1400" data-original-width="1227" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVdHKyWqqV5h8PItLYNeQlXkbOJh9oUFfCCQWoBqIqbhWqRC5bf4w_wN8ykkw1HVTEGNDtN29_4U_j9zhWEcnu1OFojqCNHWCkI0VtB3ATztt6L6Asc7-RIztNI9PCyz0CW26i8X3HrwE/w350-h400/4.jpg" width="350" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">I am participating in the ATA postcard exchange this summer. My 'postcard pal' lives in Great Britain, and I have told her of my affection for her Queen, as the Queen and I share a birthday. I decided to weave a postcard sized tapestry of the Queen to send, and have it almost completed. One of the things that this has, once again, convinced me of is that weaving a tapestry, no matter the size or subject matter, actually renews my 'MoJo!' So as soon as this one is finished, I'm going to be ready to start another.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZbhCliDukA8znEj2A3LRSu5aHhgF73PgPkABGhQTkByQ_cbCQEatNi4fJkhSEGG6kxqo6c7m37ncbktJVQ3OQGIoBIsb71vFDYSaG1edWed_4YH1QXn8V8D8oFOBCxN1YcfAnkd3APgw/s1400/3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="1400" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZbhCliDukA8znEj2A3LRSu5aHhgF73PgPkABGhQTkByQ_cbCQEatNi4fJkhSEGG6kxqo6c7m37ncbktJVQ3OQGIoBIsb71vFDYSaG1edWed_4YH1QXn8V8D8oFOBCxN1YcfAnkd3APgw/w400-h300/3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">In the meantime, it is apricot season. We didn't have any last year, due to a late freeze. We had a freeze this year, as well, but just enough of one to thin out the fruit, which is a good thing, occasionally. I made no jam last year, and need to make some this year. That is on today's agenda... and tomorrow's, and probably the next day as well. This is just the first picked batch.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I hope you are all keeping your MoJo - your creative magic. I am finding it is OK to be somewhat isolated. I am also discovering how uncomfortable I feel among uncaring people. So I will be jamming in my kitchen, and weaving in my studio for the time being! Take care! They are, however, very different in temperament, Poe being an explorer and doer, and Ringo being his audience to see how things turn out, before joining Poe’s mischief. When they laid together on the living room rug, they reminded my of the yin/yang symbol, and that in turn seemed to define their relationship and personalities. Because the pandemic is, of course, NOT over! Even though many, including myself, are now vaccinated, many more are not. And, until the number of cases and deaths stops climbing, the virus is still here, changing and growing stronger. I also confess that I did not find the isolation as difficult as I thought it would be. I believe doing without things and activities and demands that I had believed to be important has been good for me. It has taught me that there is more that I don’t need than I realized, and I do not miss those things and demands at all.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I continue to stay in my smaller orbit, working in my studio, seeing a few vaccinated friends outside, and still wearing a mask when I go to the grocery store. This will all be over someday, but, surprisingly, I find I am not in a rush. As an introvert, my little woven web has been comfortable enough, and I find that I am more comfortable in it that I am in the larger, much more complex 'out there' filled with so many others who are not as careful as I have been.</div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript">

The first one was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niki_de_Saint_Phalle">Niki de Saint Phalle</a>, a French-American sculptor, painter, and film maker who is best known for her giant mosaic sculptures of women, called 'Nanas.' Like all of the other artists, she worked for women's rights and racial equality throughout her life and in her work.</div><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9nNGSu9VbiMTMNQa15SvNkZI6ZFHJhWERymweZRKxjXuJQhyphenhyphenalvwheZBSPb8J6mACG1pQSyE0mN1sJcUJk8P1ToBsm19dyiey5tVpAwuh21t8FHR7S4mMdrlcoakw6p_IFgqwxHUuuRc/s931/IMG_2282.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="931" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9nNGSu9VbiMTMNQa15SvNkZI6ZFHJhWERymweZRKxjXuJQhyphenhyphenalvwheZBSPb8J6mACG1pQSyE0mN1sJcUJk8P1ToBsm19dyiey5tVpAwuh21t8FHR7S4mMdrlcoakw6p_IFgqwxHUuuRc/w323-h400/IMG_2282.jpg" width="323" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">The second artist was a Japanese artist, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Yayoi-Kusama">Yayoi Kusama</a>. She is still working, and openly confronts issues that bring attention to mental health. Her philosophy is that she is just one red dot among many other dots, and polka dots are common in her work. She is also a performance artist, and creates amazing infinity rooms. While her work fascinates me, she is perhaps the one I had most difficulty sketching and relating to.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0UBXD9oW4ZD89GEU_PcyRBqjq9Odyp6oyvBnzfsQGTr-m4RYsX1EULzbmIVN7jUvvqmoZ9SHa53NiBshG6u-Gl5ByuFYigDhSF2zYCoVX9Y86NukaTepOXvdob2_Ln04vWMnp-l-joGQ/s934/IMG_2276.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="934" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0UBXD9oW4ZD89GEU_PcyRBqjq9Odyp6oyvBnzfsQGTr-m4RYsX1EULzbmIVN7jUvvqmoZ9SHa53NiBshG6u-Gl5ByuFYigDhSF2zYCoVX9Y86NukaTepOXvdob2_Ln04vWMnp-l-joGQ/w321-h400/IMG_2276.jpg" width="321" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I loved the work of the third artist, <a href="https://www.hilmaafklint.se/en/">Hilma af Klint</a>. She was creating abstract art before Wassily Kandinsky, who is credited with creating the 'first abstract art.' After losing a sister at a young age, she became a spiritualist, believing that her work came through her from the spiritual realm. She was a contemporary of Arthur Conan Doyle (though she was Swedish, and he was British,) who was also a spiritualist. Before her death, Hilma af Klint sealed her artwork, allowing it to be opened only after she had been dead for 20 years. When it was opened, the number of works, and the size of many of them, was astounding... and stunning!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJRNd6Y3aqJ82k-G9OzgHCmwZyoaOFPRHbAHiZQaf-vBMrC9oK1dx1Bw7XDz6Qm4xS66cl5TEoetD9Fjrzjb9rDOhiZ5AcRaOy0zpqrtwpf-xq6SPUNrBLkZAMLWm-BtNT-AMDj74PCo/s1074/IMG_2281.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1074" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJRNd6Y3aqJ82k-G9OzgHCmwZyoaOFPRHbAHiZQaf-vBMrC9oK1dx1Bw7XDz6Qm4xS66cl5TEoetD9Fjrzjb9rDOhiZ5AcRaOy0zpqrtwpf-xq6SPUNrBLkZAMLWm-BtNT-AMDj74PCo/w279-h400/IMG_2281.jpg" width="279" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://www.delempicka.org">Tamara de Lempicka</a> was born in Poland, but worked mostly in France and the US, painting Art Deco portraits of the wealthy and famous, and stylized nudes. I identify with her as a fiber artist, as she creates the most wonderful art quilts, which are then often used to illustrate children's books. To create her portrait, I wanted to use fabric, but didn't have time to quilt, so I took photos of some of the fabric in my 'stash,' and 'quilted' it digitally.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie7zSAQWWCXS7dL4_wOy1Q5pn4eSUCErfOuXD8kybMNEAqVl4AyH3lwXcb-TGC2h9jnjURHGX6aHcJVmCsJOkgJgGXRHyQ7SvRjD6IBhj9HPAhWRim-9Eyc9ye0wTxLr08HXpwH73kmyU/s750/IMG_2279.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="594" data-original-width="750" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie7zSAQWWCXS7dL4_wOy1Q5pn4eSUCErfOuXD8kybMNEAqVl4AyH3lwXcb-TGC2h9jnjURHGX6aHcJVmCsJOkgJgGXRHyQ7SvRjD6IBhj9HPAhWRim-9Eyc9ye0wTxLr08HXpwH73kmyU/w400-h316/IMG_2279.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Spanish Surrealist painter and creator, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maruja_Mallo">Maruja Mallo,</a> was a contemporary of Salvador Dali. Augusta battled sexism, racism, and religious and family discouragement throughout her life and career. She is best known for a large sculpture called "the Harp," or also "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Shown in my sketch, it is of a line of singers, held in a hand, to form a harp. Because she could not afford to have it bronzed, it was destroyed after being exhibited in the 1939 New York World's Fair. Ms. Savage claims her legacy to be the work of her many students, and a scholarship in her name continues to encourage young sculptors.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPacRgaToFdb7hIHTfFR6mdaT4eqb_al6Nw8ljCVY5INn_beNFY-Z1i-6nCQx58_vQX8zypDUxFRyL_uT6ipXKAHFl-4RwOEP_Kwv6SUIaSIIMUPvFG4sSjRjCIVjKOb5R0Rh-ytTkyKg/s750/IMG_2278.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPacRgaToFdb7hIHTfFR6mdaT4eqb_al6Nw8ljCVY5INn_beNFY-Z1i-6nCQx58_vQX8zypDUxFRyL_uT6ipXKAHFl-4RwOEP_Kwv6SUIaSIIMUPvFG4sSjRjCIVjKOb5R0Rh-ytTkyKg/w400-h400/IMG_2278.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I confess that I feel very satisfied to have learned about and sketched all seven of these women artists this past week.
