Cutting off....

I finished the "September" tapestry this afternoon and have cut it off! I didn't have a cutting off party, as I really just have too much else going on right now, so I 'partied' and cut it off by myself. Above is a photo of it still on the loom, but with hem woven, ready to cut off. After I weave the hem, I cut every other pair of warps across, tying them close to the fell line as I go. You can see the ones already cut hanging down in front of the tapestry in the photo below.
Then, with the weft secured by the cut and tied warps, I can cut the rest off the loom, unwind the tapestry, and untie the warps from the front beam. Below is the finished tapestry, lying face down on my dining room table to 'rest' before I tie off the rest of the warp ends, trim warp and the weft threads hanging out the back down to about an inch long, sew all slits longer than 1/4 inch, block and mount it. Then I'll take some good photos and will post one here!

Yay! Congratulations!!!!

It looks beautiful!! Looking forward to seeing the front of it, now that it's complete! The back is even beautiful.

Sounds like you have motivation to finish the piece. That's often a place I get stuck....just letting things languish.

Love this tapestry and can't wait to see the next photos of it!!

Be still, my heart.....it's beautiful and we readers are all so lucky to have watched its genesis and grown with it...I appreciate the review of the cutting off process...will you hang it on your kitchen wall???...from a fan of Wooster who wishes we could have another tapestry of him...aka Janet on the East Coast

Congratulations, Kathy! What a great way to celebrate a Friday the 13th...to cut a new tapestry from the loom! I'm eager to see the front of it.

I'll try to get the finishing process done and photos taken this week. What usually motivates me to finish is a deadline, and I do have one coming up!

Beautiful! And it must be satisfying to have it off the loom! Thanks for the links to the tutorials. Out of curiosity, how long do you let your tapestries rest?

Jennifer, I let them rest at least overnight. But it usually depends on what else is going on in my life. If I have a 'looming' deadline, overnight is long enough. If I have a busy weekend ahead, like this past one, it may rest for days, as this one has, until it is tired of resting!

String Theory

Ok, I don’t know anything about string theory, except maybe what I see on The Big Bang. But there is an excellent fiber exhibit right now ...
